Basseterre, St. Kitts – Members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga recently journeyed to two primary schools in St. Kitts to share the principles of the Rotary Four-Way Test. On June 17 and 18, the Club members visited and interacted with students, teachers and staff at the Irishtown Primary and Bronte Welsh Primary Schools, respectively.

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and non-sectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotarian Dr Ismay Taylor led the presentations on the Four-Way Test and also gave the students an overview of what is Rotary and what being a Rotarian is all about. Her discussion with the students and teachers was illustrated and enlivened with videos illustrating how applying the Four-Way Test is beneficial in everyday life. The featured video was the “Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure”; the story of a young entrepreneur who starts an apple dumpling business. With the guidance of a mysterious voice, conveying the Four-Way Test, he turns his venture into a wonderful success and makes friends along the way. At the end of the interactive session, bookmarks inscribed with the Rotary Four-Way Test were distributed to students and teachers of each school.

At the conclusion of each school visit, the Rotarians unveiled large, wall-mounted signs displaying the Four-Way Test and encouraged students, teachers and staff to read it daily and live up to its principles.
