Service Above Self: The Rotary Club of Liamuiga’s Journey with the Saddlers Home for the Elderly.

Since its founding in 2003, the Rotary Club of Liamuiga has lived its motto, “Service Above Self.” Nowhere is this commitment more evident than in the Club’s enduring partnership with the Saddlers Home for the Elderly. What began as small gestures of kindness has blossomed into over two decades of compassion, practical support, and genuine companionship for the residents of this cherished home.

In its early days, the Club’s visits were marked by simple but heartfelt contributions—hygiene products, meals, and tokens of comfort. But the elders valued most the warmth of conversation, the laughter, and the reassurance that they were remembered and loved. These visits set the tone for a relationship built on empathy and service.
As the years passed, the Rotary Club responded to the everyday needs of the home. Members painted rooms, repaired handrails, donated fans and bedding, and provided medical and cleaning supplies. Each act, though modest, made life safer and more comfortable, while also preserving the dignity of the residents.

When the COVID-19 pandemic brought fear and isolation, the Club stood firm in its service. Members delivered protective equipment, food, and hygiene supplies, while also donating tablets so residents could connect virtually with family. Rotarians sang from outside windows and waved from the gates—reminders that love and care can transcend barriers.
In more recent years, the Club established a tradition of visiting Saddlers every National Heroes Day, September 16. These visits became opportunities not only to serve meals but also to create community. Residents and Rotarians shared lunch, laughter, and stories of the past—personal accounts of resilience and triumph that connect generations and strengthen the nation’s memory.

This year, the Rotary Club undertook an internal beautification project at the home, refreshing the walls with paint and replacing curtain rods to brighten and uplift the living spaces. As always, the day was completed with food, fellowship, and storytelling, leaving behind not just a revitalized home but renewed spirits.
For the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, the work with Saddlers is not about recognition—it is about presence, empathy, and consistency. By combining practical improvements with genuine companionship, the Club has shown the community what “Service Above Self” truly means. For the residents, it is dignity and comfort; for the community, it is a living example of how service builds family.
