Saddlers Village, St. Kitts – On Saturday September 16, 2017, members of the Rotary club of Liamuiga descended on the village of Saddlers to share sumptuous meals with the residents of the Saddlers Home for the Elderly and elderly of the surrounding communities. For the past 13 years, the Rotarians have spent National Heroes Day (September 16) fellowshipping with these unsung heroes in our communities; the elderly.
“Our Club certainly looks forward to this annual luncheon every year but it is listening to the experiences of our elderly, unsung heroes that is the most rewarding part of this wonderful event for us,” said Chad Allen, President of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga.
In addition to the delicious cuisine, the over 30 elderly persons in attendance were treated to gospel songs and local folk songs led by Mr Creighton Pencheon and his guitar. The unsung heroes were fully engaged and joined in in singing the various choruses. The singing soon turned into the sharing of local folk tales and personal memories of yesteryear; from working in the sugar cane fields as young children to sleeping on ‘lodgings’.
During the eating, drinking and merriment, Dr Marcus L Natta, Vice President of the Club, handed over a 32-inch LCD TV and 2 standing fans to the Saddlers Home for the Elderly on behalf of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga. The Club also donated and mounted a new welcome sign on the exterior fence of the facility. He noted that the Club sees the Home’s residents and care officers as their family and always seek to provide them with items that they may need.
Acting Manager of the Saddlers Home, Francess Madir, accepted the donations and thanked the Rotarians for their continued support and partnership with the Home. Also in attendance were Ms Celia Christopher, Director (Ag.) in the Department of Gender Affairs and Ms Ann Wigley, Deputy Director of Social Services.
President Chad noted that the Club continues to support relief efforts for neighbouring islands in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. He added that upcoming projects include: the Club’s Annual Primary School Spelling Bee Competition, and Annual Christmas Hamper distribution to the less fortunate, among others. The Club will close out the calendar year with its largest annual fundraiser, its New Year’s Charity Ball on December 31st at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.
